The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced the resumption of maintenance works on the Kampala Northern Bypass, warning motorists of traffic diversions starting February 13.
The works, expected to last at least two months, will affect the section between Bwaise Interchange and Namungoona Interchange, a key stretch used by thousands of daily commuters.
In a public notice on Monday, Permanent Secretary Bageya Waiswa said the maintenance will involve removal of the existing asphalt, base preparation, priming, and laying of a new asphalt overlay.
“The Ministry of Works and Transport wishes to inform all road users on the planned resumption of periodic maintenance works along the Kampala Northern Bypass, Phase One, commencing on 13th February 2026, for a period of at least two months,” Bageya said.
The works will be carried out by M/s Stirling Civil Engineering Ltd on behalf of the ministry.
To allow for safe and efficient operations, the affected section of the carriageway will be fully closed, with traffic temporarily diverted to the opposite side.
“Motorists are advised to exercise patience, observe all traffic signage, and comply with instructions issued by traffic personnel on site,” Bageya added.
Road users have also been urged to plan their journeys in advance and, where possible, use alternative routes to reduce congestion during the maintenance period.
“Road users are still advised to plan their journeys in advance and, where possible, use alternative routes off the Northern Bypass to minimise inconvenience,” he said.
The government apologised for the disruption, saying the works aim to improve road infrastructure and enhance the driving experience along the corridor.
“We regret any disruption caused and appreciate your cooperation as we undertake works to improve road infrastructure and enhance the overall driving experience,” Bageya said.
The Kampala Northern Bypass is a vital transport artery that diverts traffic from Kampala’s city centre and connects major highways leading to northern and western Uganda.
